Shepherd Construction and Camstead Homes recently held a Topping Out ceremony to celebrate construction reaching the highest point on the new centro project on Purbeck Road in Cambridge. Completion of the building is set for Summer 2008.

The Topping Out event borrowed Scandinavian and ancient Saxon traditions which are believed to bring good fortune to the occupants of the building.

The ceremony saw Shepherd’s Divisional Construction Director, David Crampton, invite guests from the client and project team to add five symbolic ingredients into a cement mixture. The ingredients added were wine, providing fertility and wisdom; oil for liberty and prosperity; salt for purity and hospitality, corn to ripen prosperity and a yew tree branch, which is a symbol of completion. A block containing the mixture was then built into the fabric of the building.

To commemorate the event, Shepherd also presented Camstead Homes with a specially commissioned cake decorated with an artist’s impression of the finished building.
